Cathedral (Santa Maria Assunta) | Three-aisle transept basilica with a wooden roof, twin towers, and apse oriented to the west. The nave elevation has three stories. The arcade consists of columns as well as piers supporting transverse diaphragm arches. Above the arcade is a tribune level with triple openings, then a clerestory with single lights. The clerestory windows are echoed by blind arcades above the diaphragm arches. The side aisles are vaulted to support the tribune, which in turn is covered by half-barrel vaults. The transept is low and wide, with long arches spanning the space between the crossing piers and the west responds. The interior features rich decoration including polychrome revetment on the arches. The exterior boasts a high east facade with twin towers, an elaborately sculpted portal, and a rose window. Above the lateral chapels is a small gallery with openings decorated by Gothic tracery. | 40 |
