Building Phases A church was founded on this site by count Rodolfo de Molisio around 1080. It was restored in the 13th century by bishops Matteo and Poliziano; the latter also consecrated the building in 1215. Further decorations were added by bishop Giovanni in the first half of the 13th century. The cathedral was damaged by the earthquakes of 1456, 1688 and 1805, as well by the bombardments of 1943, and was therefore restored several times. Excavations from 1994-1997 have revealed the foundations of two medieval apses.
