After a 1456 earthquake, the castle was reconstructed by order of Ferdinand I of Aragon, King of Naples. Construction was still underway in 1492, when the documents mention Oliviero di Ponte Landolfo as "procurator fabricae." Construction halted briefly, then resumed in 1499.
