Building Phases A Norman castle from the 12th Century was enriched by a residential wing by Frederick II in the first half of the 13th Century. Largely rebuilt by Pierre d’Angicourt under Charles I of Anjou (briefs from 1269-1282): new Palladium and Chapel, new curtain walls with a circular tower and a door, and a moat outside. Wide fortifications by Charles V with the addition of bastions, thickening of the Angevin walls and fitting with modern military weapons and techniques.
