| Building Phases | Begun in 1494, constructed by Francesco di Giorgio under the patronage of Alphonse II of Aragon (while Duke of Calabria). The castle, visible in some historic images, was a quadrangular edifice with round corner towers. It was reconstructed during the sixteenth-century Viceregal period and was renovated many times over subsequent centuries, resulting in the enlarged plan and destruction of the round towers. |
