Building Phases | The cathedral was begun after the 1164 destruction of Bitetto by King William I of Hauteville. Between 1333-35, following a donation by King Robert of Anjou, the church was renovated under Bishop G. Bonocore and the master builder Lillus of Barletta. Nave and transept are Romanesque and are probably of twelfth-century date, while facade contains Gothic elements and probably dates to the fourteenth century. The square choir extending from the apse was constructed between 1735 and 1745. |
